In January 2024 I began construction on my pottery studio. My spouse and I decided to downsize our garage and turn the rest into my work space. It was an involved project including multiple contractors: a cement crew, HVAC people, Stucco guy, drywall and texture guys, insulation people and our favorite handyman.
Now that it’s done I feel so privileged to have a space to make. It’s well-lit, fits my three stations (Glazing, Hand Building, Throwing) and is a place my family feels happy to hang out in too.
The process began with a measuring tape, a pencil, graph paper, a list of to-dos and a budget (haha). It didn’t feel real until the paint went on the wall though.

I found a sink on a restaurant website that was much cheaper than the utility sinks I was looking at and it was much more what I wanted. My sink is deep — fits a 5 gallon bucket plus plenty of space. I want to recycle clay on the sink’s drain board and also recycle glaze in a special mini-bucket where I will wash my brushes. The water drains into a 5 gallon bucket that has wheels. When it’s full, I wheel it out to my garden and dump it. Works great so far.

I wanted to try a more mold-resistant ware board so my handyman bought Hardi-Backer boards and cut them into custom sizes. I used painters tape to cover the edges because I heard the dust from the cut edges is a health hazard. So far, they are amazing! No moldy pots yet. I just dried a set of tiles on these boards and there was no warping. Couldn’t be happier.
